WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION CAREFULLY IN PREPARATION FOR A QUIZ AT THE END OF THIS MODULE. YOU MUST PASS THE QUIZ TO CONTINUE ON TO THE REST OF THE ONLINE WORKSHOP.

ACADEMIC TERMS

In the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, academic actions are taken at the end of the Fall and Spring terms.  Academic actions taken at the end of Spring carry through to the Fall semester; there are no exceptions.  Official notification of your academic status is sent at the end of each semester via a letter from the Associate Dean of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences.  Students should notify Admissions and Records of any change of address.  For a more detailed explanation of the academic policy, see the UHM catalog.

ACADEMIC PROBATION

Students may be placed on academic probation at the end of any semester in which their cumulative GPA falls below 2.00. They will continue to be on probation until their cumulative GPA is raised to 2.0 or higher. While on academic probation:  Students will need to maintain a minimum semester GPA of 2.00 to continue to register. * FAILURE TO MEET THESE MINIMUM CRITERIA MAY RESULT IN SUSPENSION OR DISMISSAL *

  • If a student's semester GPA falls below 2.00, while he/she is on probation he/she will either be suspended or dismissed depending on his/her previous academic actions.  See below for more information on these actions.

  • Semester GPAs of 2.00 will keep a student in school but will do little to raise that students cumulative GPA.  To achieve a higher semester GPA, students should balance their credit load and course selection.

Students can withdraw from classes through the ninth week (check the Schedule of Classes or appropriate websites each semester for deadlines).

Students can receive incomplete (“I”) grades.

  • A student's semester GPA without the “I” grades factored in must still be at least 2.00.

CONTINUED ACADEMIC PROBATION

Students on academic probation will remain (continue) on probation as long as they maintain a minimum semester GPA of 2.00 and remain on academic probation until they raise their cumulative GPA to 2.00 or higher. Students continued on probation are subject to the above rules on academic probation.

A semester GPA below 2.0 will result in suspension or dismissal.

REMOVED FROM ACADEMIC PROBATION

Students are removed from academic probation when they have fulfilled the conditions of academic probation and their cumulative GPA is raised to 2.00 or higher at the end of the Fall or Spring term.

ACADEMIC SUSPENSION

Students may be suspended when they fail to achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 1.7 after attempting 24 credit hours or when they fail to meet the terms of probation.

Students on suspension must sit out for 1 semester (Fall or Spring).

Please note that a student can only be suspended once at UHM.   Once a student is suspended, subsequent drops in GPA may lead to dismissal.

To return after suspension, a student must formally apply for readmission (fill out application form and follow all necessary steps). Readmission after suspension: Students who are readmitted after suspension return on academic probation and must meet the terms and conditions of probation as specified above.

Readmission is automatic as long as the student does not take classes elsewhere, and applies in a timely manner. Readmission is not automatic if the student chooses to stay out longer than the specified period of suspension, or takes courses at another school.

Students who attend other institutions or choose to stay enrolled in the summer term in Outreach College will be considered “transfer students” and must meet all transfer requirements when reapplying.  Students must submit an application by the published deadline and their transcripts to Admissions and Records.

ACADEMIC DISMISSAL

Students who have been suspended and who subsequently fail to maintain the minimum academic requirements of UHM and their college or fail to meet the terms of academic probation may be dismissed.  Students are not eligible for readmission to UHM for a minimum of one academic year.  Such students will be readmitted only in unusual circumstances. For regulations governing academic dismissal please see the UHM catalog.
