Academic Program

The Department of Zoology at the UH offers undergraduate programs leading to bachelor of science and bachelor of arts degrees and a zoology minor, and graduate programs that offer master of science and PhD degrees. Of particular note is the department’s emphasis on tropical marine biology and evolutionary biology. There are few places in the U.S. where these emphases can be pursued more productively or in a more practical setting.

Students can acquire a broad background for a career in marine biology. The BS degree is particularly suited for students preparing for graduate training in zoology and related fields and for those seeking immediate employment in zoology-related research and application markets, providing the broadest scientific background at the undergraduate level. Students preparing for pre-professional programs (pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-physical therapy, pre-veterinary medical) should consider the BA degree.  It provides greater flexibility in pursuing the broad liberal arts education encouraged by professional schools. The courses applied toward the zoology major may then be selected with those programs in mind.

Major related skills

In addition to discipline specific content, zoology majors have the ability to:

  • apply scientific methodology and use scientific equipment.
  • organize and maintain accurate records.
  • analyze, problem solve, and make analogies proficiently.
  • compute numerically and conduct basic statistical analyses.
  • integrate ideas and concepts across biological disciplines.
  • design, conduct, and interpret scientific research.
  • make critical observations and evaluations, and apply the scientific approach to problems.
  • present results and conclusions verbally and in writing.
  • present information through the design and production of charts and graphs.

    Declaring Zoology as a Major

Click here for a form-fillable version of the Declaration of Major Form.  Complete the first page of the form and print two copies. Make an appointment with a faculty advisor in the Zoology Department to discuss your interests, major requirements, and course selection.  The advisor will complete the second page of the form.  Two copies of the completed form should then be turned in at the service counter for Arts & Sciences Student Academic Services.
Note:  Click here if you are adding a second major - you will need to use a declaration of major form that has not been pre-filled to declare zoology as your first major.  Click here for concurrent degree requests (i.e., between A&S and another college or different degree programs within A&S, such as concurrent BA and BS degrees).
