Academic Program

The music department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music, and as well as a more specialized Bachelor of Music. Bachelor degree concentrations include performance and composition, music education, and general music studies. The department is housed in a complex of buildings, including studios, practice and rehearsal facilities, and the Mae Zenke Orvis Auditorium, noted for its fine acoustics. In addition to many offerings in Western classical, vocal, and instrumental music, the department offers a wide range of courses in non-Western music, notably the musics of Asia and the Pacific.

Major-related Skills

In addition to discipline specific content, music majors have the ability to:

  • interpret abstract symbols in order to convey ideas and emotions to others.
  • work collaboratively as a team.
  • pay strong attention to individual detail, as well as the whole.
  • demonstrate perseverance, self-discipline, self-awareness, and self-assurance.
  • think precisely in the moment.
  • make judgments about artistic works and their performance.
  • make critical observations and evaluations.
  • Recognize how content influences form, and how form determines content.

    Declaring Music as a Major

Check the Department of Music's website for information on admissions requirements as well as procedures for declaring your major.  Click here for a form-fillable major declaration form.  Complete the first page of the Declaration of Major form and print two copies. Make an appointment with a faculty advisor in Music to discuss your interests, major requirements, and course selection.  The advisor will complete the second page of the form.  Two copies of the completed form should then be turned in to Arts & Sciences Student Academic Services.
Note:  Click here if you are adding a second major - you will need to use a declaration of major form that has not been pre-filled to declare Music as your first major.  Click here for concurrent degree requests (i.e., between A&S and another college or different degree programs within A&S, such as concurrent BA and BS degrees).
