Academic Program

The Department of Art and Art History offers two separate but interrelated programs.  Art history, leading to the BA, affords the opportunity to study the arts of Asia, Pacific, and the West in a historical and cultural context. The art studio programs provide students either with a broad-based, liberal arts approach via the BA or with a more focused studio specialization leading to the BFA. The latter is considered more appropriate for students intending to pursue the MFA at the graduate level.

The department is housed in an excellent three-story facility with painting studios, photography and computer labs (Macintosh equipped for graphic design, network Windows graphics workstations for animation and PCs for expanded arts), and fully equipped printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, and glass facilities.  The UH Art Gallery is a prominent feature of the department’s programs.  Six or seven major exhibitions are presented each year, many of which have received national recognition.  Visiting artist programs supplement the regular course offerings.

Major-Related Skills

In addition to discipline specific content, art majors have the ability to:

  • pay strong attention to individual details, as well as the whole.
  • demonstrate a strong aptitude for spatial relationships.
  • concentrate intensely for extended periods of time.
  • communicate ideas and emotions creatively.
  • demonstrate strong manual dexterity.
  • make critical observations and appropriate decisions.
  • draw relationships from the past and present.
  • visually discern things in a multidimensional manner.

    Declaring Art as a major

Click here for a form-fillable major declaration form for the BA Degree.   Complete the first page of the Declaration of Major form and print two copies. Make an appointment with a faculty advisor in the Art Department to discuss your interests, major requirements, and course selection.  The advisor will complete the second page of the form.  Two copies of the completed form should then be turned in to the service counter for Arts & Sciences Student Academic Services.

The form-fillable major declaration form for the BFA Degree should be completed after meeting the admission requirements.

Note:  Click here if you are adding a second major - you will need to use a declaration of major form that has not been pre-filled to declare Art as your first major.  Click here for concurrent degree requests (i.e., between A&S and another college or different degree programs within A&S, such as concurrent BA and BS degrees).
