Advising Expectations

Advising is a shared responsibility. Advisors and peer advisors serve as guides for students while students assume main responsibility for ensuring their academic career.

Peer advisors are paraprofessionals who are specially trained to work with first year students. They assist students with core requirements, scheduling, registration, and course selection. They may refer students to an advisor if their situation involves academic difficulty, exceptions to University policy or requires switching cores or re-evaluation of core requirements.

If students change their major or degree, their requirements may change so they must be sure to notify advisors of any changes when they visit.

Students should remember that it is important to seek advising on a regular basis to ensure that they are on track.

Above all, students should feel free to ask if they have any questions and provide as much information as possible so that peer advisors and advisors can respond fully.
